・「はい」とも「いいえ」とも言えない場合に使える表現。

【Roxy】I know, Mom. I won't to be able to eat Dad's seafood paella for a while.
【Dad】Your grandmother is a marvelous cook, Roxy.
I'm sure you'll enjoy her cooking.
【Roxy】Grandma can't make this dish, can she? *2
【Dad】I'm not sure about that.
I can always send her the recipe, so don't worry about it.
【Roxy】Thanks, Dad.

・判断を保留したいときに使えるフレーズ。同意も不同意もできないときに使える表現。
・「よく分からない」と保留のフレーズだけだと、相手は不安を感じる。
よく分からないんだったら分からないなりに会話を続けなければならない。
今回はアイデアを加えている。

・「なんとも言えません。私は意見を述べる前にもっと情報が必要です」。
・It's hard to say. / It's difficult to say. はまとめて覚えておく。「言うことは難しい」=「なんとも言えません」
・これも保留のフレーズだけでなく理由も加えている。

・「私は言いたくはありません。トラブルになる可能性があるので」。
・would like to = want の大人っぽい言い方。
・could もしかしたらそうした可能性があるかもしれない、という少し引いた表現。

・「あなたがイギリスに行く前の」
・イギリスに行くのは未来のことだけど現在形で使われている。イギリスに行くことは確定しており、will のような「～だろう」ということはなく事実として前提になっている。なので事実を述べる現在形を使っている。
*2 Grandma can't make this dish, can she?
・「おばあさんはこの料理作れないわよね？」
・付加疑問文。軽い疑問や念押しの気持ちを表すかたち。
前が否定だったら後ろは肯定疑問、前が肯定だったら後ろは否定疑問。
