"What do you mean～?"のあとにさらにつけると、より細かく「それどういう意味？」と尋ねることができる表現。

「それはどういう意味ですか」と聞くには？

⇒　What do you mean by that?

※この" by ~ "　「～によって」という表現をつけることによって、特に理解できなかったところを細かく聞くことができる。

例：友人：Listen, I broke up.（聞いてよ 別れちゃったんだ）

　　ハリーさん：What do you mean by "I broke up"?（「別れた」ってどういう意味？）

例：アダムスありささん＜お米が嫌いって言った友達が信じられなくて＞

　　What do you mean by you don't like rice?（「お米が嫌い」ってどういう意味？）

※びっくりしすぎて分からないときにも使える。

※言い方によってケンカをうってるように聞こえるので、言い方に注意する。

＜ストーリー＞耳コピなのでかなり不正確です(???は聞き取れなかった部分)。緑部分は正確です。

Rajeev: Makoto, you have been stearing at those photos since I got here.

Makoto: I can't help it. Just look at him.

Rajeev: OK, OK. I agree that??? he's really cute.

Makoto: Rajeev, you love been??? a grandpa.

Rajeev: I already am. In fact, I have seven grandkids.

Makoto: Seven? Wow, that's a lot.

Rajeev: Your grandson is a rat, right?

Makoto: A rat? What do you mean by that? Are you saying he looks like a rat?!

Rajeev: That's not what I mean. It's the year of the ox now. But he was born in the year of the rat, right?

Makoto: Oh, you mean his Oriental zodiac sign. （ああ なるほど干支の話ね）Yes, that's right.
